She lunged her horse in the field next to the barn before riding - TopicsExpress

She lunged her horse in the field next to the barn before riding so that the horse would be a little worn out. This horse however had a lot of energy and as she cracked the whip in the air to make the horse move around in the circle, he shook his head, pulled around and kicked her right in the knee. My Mother fell down right in the field and laid there for some time. The horse ran off to the end of the field and there he stood, eating grass. When the ambulance took her to the emergency room, the doctor wanted to cut off her English riding boots for x-rays. You have seen these boots before, they are tight and go all the way up to the knee with your britches (yes, they are called riding britches) tucked inside. There was no way she was going to let them cut up her expensive riding boots! So they called Dad in from the waiting room where we all sat. Dad didn’t care how much the boots cost, ‘let them cut the damn things off!’. Nope, she wasn’t going to have any of that. So.. carefully, slowly, they pulled the boot off. After the x-rays, they found that the kick to the knee had shattered her knee cap. She had to have surgery of coarse and they put two big bolts to hold the knee together. That was my Mother. Here she has a shattered knee cap, in major pain and she had Dad pull off that boot. I can’t even imagine the pain. She was the strongest person I ever met. This accident did not keep her from riding though. After that, she continued to jump horses and yes, she had major falls on them, but again, she never stopped riding. This is one of many favorite stories of my Mother. I share this with you, because on July 3rd 2006 at 11:34 pm this world lost a very special person and I lost my best friend.
