Shitty things on my mind this morning. As i dress to leave the house, the less threatening my attire, the more I become a target for people to mess with so they can up their street cred and feel like they punked a black dude. The more I play into the respectability politics of, If I look nice and get murdered, maybe they wont look into my past for some reason I deserved it. So if I carry myself in a self preservationist mode that keeps people from interacting with me negatively, I also ward off the people who dont think that way because now I look like a scary/creepy black man. Which opens me up for profiling and again, murdered because I deserved it. Thankfully where I live now isnt this bad. Not in my experience anyway. But there are so many that go through this debate every day like me and have choices to make that are purely reactionary. A culture and a world theyd lie to change, but without the funds, the voice and the power to shift minds, the movement is slow. We need to hurry this along America. We need to be better, faster.
