Short Review on Dumb & Dumber To. SPOILER ALERT , obvvy :P Well i have watched Dumb & Dumber To, and as a fan of the first, I wasnt sure on how to review it as its sort of difficult to talk about. I had heard some mixed reviews from others who had already seen the film in the U.S before hand. One half saying they enjoyed it and it brought the nostalgia back from the first film, and hearing that a relief came over me. Though others on the contrary would say they miss shot completely and its really not a great or funny film. To that, like many other fans of the first, i would be in shock and think How dare you!, the same shock of somebody smacking a baby. You just dont do that. We were all happy to finally hear the Fallery brothers give birth after 20 years, to the sibling of a beloved film we all grew up with. Despite the horrible image now in your head - Its how we all felt. Unfortunately the truth is, this particular baby is kind of ugly, and you sort of want to smack to too after youve seen it. Ill try to refrain from comparing it with the first film and treat it like a stand alone the best i can. Though once you see what a team of talented people can create, its hard not to have some type of expectation. The beginning was basically an extended version of the hospital scene we saw in the trailer and apart from the dialogue we already knew, a few extra comedy lines were thrown in that made some audience laugh, but the rest fell completely flat. From the writers side i can see how they just wanted to describe the past 20 years in the dumbest way possible and get it out the way to let them jump into the film. But nothing was really getting me into the comedy mood that a film like this should within the first 3 minutes. They even used the same intro music as the first film to bring in the title but i actually thought it wasnt quite deserved. It is their own film, sure. But was that really the buckle up, this is gonna be a good one intro they were giving us after all this time? Story has never been the big part of Dumb & Dumber, the creators have also said this. They wanted to focus more on the relationship between Harry & Lloyd whilst back on the road. But what gave the first film a slight golden edge was the fact that the story wasnt massive but still solid. It was simple, thorough and was paced nicely throughout, this allowed the situational humor to work smoother alongside the physical comedy of the actors. The whole thing was a nice blend. I found that with D&D 2 though, the story however not crucial kept sort of skipping a beat when it came to pace. Its like the editors pasted together a compilation of comedy scenes in the best ways that made sense with what they had. But if like me, you can still enjoy the film just by watching he actors performance alone, even then your left with an annoying itch behind your eye. Jim Carrey is someone iv been a massive fan of and have loved pretty much all of his films predating 2003. An actor that could bring his own comedy brand into any title and change it for the better. Without him, we wouldnt have the Ace Ventura films, Me, Myself & Irene, Liar Liar and even the first Dumb & Dumber. It just wouldnt have been the same without Carry. The trouble is, Im not too sure what the ten year hiatus has done to him, while playing Lloyd Christmas in the new film, he went for more of the cartoony angle. I dont think he was trying to force or fake the character, the dial was set just a little too high. His Zaniness to Poised balance had lop-sided, and Jims comedy seems to have in no better way to describe it; withered over time. Jeff Daniels played Harry just like the first film which was great to see and while Jim Carrey had his moments, i think Jeff brought a lot of the nostalgia factor to this flick. Harry had some great lines that made me laugh out loud, half of that is down to Jeffs delivery and timing which makes me realise that the flat desert isnt at all down to the actors. I now understand both sides of the reviews i had heard. Its nostalgic to see the two on screen together but thats the only enjoyable thing about it. If you have seen the first film, id say watch the second one. This is the closest to seeing 90s style Carrey again and there are some moments i thought the jokes was pretty clever and began to settle and enjoy the film. Parts did make me laugh and i liked watching Carrey & Daniels bounce off each other. -Although despite what i wrote earlier, it is just a bit hard not to compare it with the first installment and not notice the differences. 6/10 on the Slut-Drop Rating ;)
