Shortening Prayer for Crying Child The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, I stand in prayer and would like to make it long but I hear the crying of a child and shorten my prayer not wanting to make things difficult for its mother. [Sahih Bukhari] This hadith tells us a number of things regarding the practice of Islam during the time of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam): 1. Women attended the congregation prayers behind the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). 2. They brought their children along with them. 3. The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) did not discourage them from coming on account of their children disturbing others, rather, he (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) accommodated them by shortening the prayer. Again, we see how sensitive and considerate Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) was towards others.
