Shotokan Kata - WANKAN (Part #2): As my training and understanding of the principles that govern Karate continue too evolve I see how various concepts can impact our performance positively. Awareness of these subtle concepts nurtures a sensitivity of ones own actions, thoughts, and feelings. This awareness gained through the refinement of our skills is the roots of Zanshin (Continuing Mind). During the Kata Wankan the practitioner performs Tate-shuto Uke (Vertical Knife Hand Block) while moving forward three different times. While performing these movements I place emphasis on ensuring the body continues moving forward with a sense of urgency. Even though these movements are performed slowly inherently Tate-shuto is preemptive rather then reactive.
