Property developer Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI) recently signed a compromise and framework agreement with the Federation of Sicogon Island Farmers and Fisherfolk Association and the Sicogon Development Corp. (SIDECO) for the conversion of Sicogon Island in Carles town, Iloilo into an eco-tourism destination. The agreement was done after ALI settled its long standing dispute with the farmers and fisherfolk in the said town. “The development is also seen to improve economies and land use through tourism, and is consistent with the government’s thrust to alleviate poverty,” ALI said in a press release. To improve access to the island, ALI said they will begin building an airport and jetty port in the first quarter of 2015. Affected residents will be relocated to resettlement sites, according to ALI. “We are glad that all the stakeholders have come to an agreement regarding development of the island,” ALI Capital Vice President Maria Corazon Dizon said.
