Since Lori and I didnt want to attract the wrong elements to the fact that our house was empty for the past week, we didnt post any updates about where weve been and what weve been doing. After 3000 miles, a rented Kia Sorento, an extremely generous Mom and Dad (Thanks, Sandra F. Johns!) Were back from a week in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We were given a week in a time-share resort as a Christmas present, and since this past week was Kyles off from school, this is the week we went. It worked out that one of his best friends, was also off the same week, and was able to go along. Lori will probably be posting many more details about what we saw and did. Ill just say that the Battleship USS North Carolina, in Wilmington was a very cool side trip. The most moving for me was the trip to Fort Sumter, in Charleston harbor. I got choked up seeing the actual flag that was taken down when Major Anderson surrendered in April, 1861. He was allowed to keep it when the Federals left the island. It was returned and raised when the fort was re-taken. The flag stayed in his family, and is now on display in the museum on the island. Ive had a brief nap, and I can now focus again. We chose to drive straight through, which I will never do again. We had two trips in the dark, in the rain through the Smokey mountains in Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina, and I will never do that kind of white-knuckle driving again. 22 hours one-way, with Lori and I sharing the driving about 60-40. Andy, I wish you and Katrina could have been there, especially at the Pirate Voyage dinner theatre. I was impressed with the spectacle, the theatre tech, and the dinner, which is usually a weak point was actually very good. If any of you have been to Medieval Times, think of that, with diners in ranks on either side of the theatre, only instead of jousting and horses, there are 2 pirate ships and a stage in the middle, all surrounded by water. overhead is a wide variety of rigging, lights, pyro and other stuff for acrobats, dancers, fire jugglers, divers, sea lions, sword fights, massive puppets and a pretty good musical score. More later. Its time to unpack. Glad we went, glad to be home.
