Sincethe fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, shouldnt we have a clear understanding of what it means to fear God? The word fear is best understood to mean reverence. We are to fear offending God. To fear God is to hate evil, Proverbs 8:13. If someones actions or lack of action is primarily motivated by not offending other people more than God, then that person lacks the fear of God. If I am more concerned by what my mate thinks about what I view on television than what my God thinks, then I have a misplaced fear! Fearing God is the beginning of wisdom.
