Sitting with a year-old tortie mom. She has 5 kittens who are six weeks old. Unfortunately she also has a nasty upper respiratory infection so the situation is dicey. Her kittens are doing well, but had to be weaned immediately. Luckily they took to their kitten food with no hesitation! Mom is heavily congested so I am going through the process of figuring out what she will eat. Cats who are congested often stop eating because they cannot smell anything, and if that goes on for more that a little while they can go down hill quickly. Poor mama. Shelters can be a stressful environment for a cat in her situation so we are trying to mitigate that by giving her the privacy of our conference room (the shelter is QUITE full these days so that is the one spot that was unoccupied by any cats). She is VERY sweet and loves affection so we are having a Friday night date in the conference room trying out foods. Just to clarify, the cat is the one trying the food. lol Thanks very much to Purina for the wide variety of food they provide to Animal House so we can do our best to meet any food need a cat may have, and thanks to this sweet little tortie mommy who is hanging in there like a champ and giving as much affection as she is getting :)
