So I spent Sunday night listening to the music of the fabulous honky-tonk/cajun/country band Hurray For the Riff Raff Their led by a Puerto Rican-American girl from the Bronx, New York, Alynda Lee Segarra, with a transgender fiddle player Yosi Perlstein. Alynda left home at 17 and rode the rails for a few years before settling in New Orleans. As Segarra says, You dont see a Puerto Rican girl play the banjo in a honky-tonk very often! You dont see a transgender drummer/fiddle player very often! Its awesome. I think its powerful that well play songs with the Tumblweeds and show publicly that we accept and love each other as musicians and people. I hope that kind of acceptance and respect is contagious. youtu.be/QEWP1VxDSu4
