So Maui is exciting in so many ways, turns out there is a big no gmo battle being waged here and Monsanto just so happens to be a major sponsor of the 92nd Maui County Fair (where I am working this weekend) which up until THIS YEAR was a no politics zone. Yesterday when we came in to set up, I noticed that there was a booth next to us that was all decorated in vote no signs and banners, here is more from a Maui resident: Ok, so the Maui Co Fair story: To be accepted into the fair you have to sign papers agreeing to rules- one of which is no political activity. No political activity in the booth or in the PARADE. At the mandatory parade meeting it was emphasized NO POLITICS. You do, they will stop the parade and escort you OUT. We planned to respect the policy and abide by rules agreed upon by all. Citizens against maui county people (brought to us by Mycogen and Monsanto) purchased booth space, decorated it in vote no stuff. It was reported to fair officials yesterday who said that this should not be happening and they would take care of it. 2pm today Bruce gets a call saying that the fair people couldnt ask the citizens against maui people to take down their signs, since they were already set up, so politics are now suddenly ok this year. I jumped in my car and ran up there with every vote yes thing I had. Upon arrival I see a huge no float, with workers bused in (those that we spoke to after the parade had no idea why they were there, most could not understand the election, let alone English). In one hour we transformed the Shaka float into vote yes messages. What the no people had planned for weeks with unlimited funds, we matched in one hour. A good 30 people came, it was AWESOME. I was with my husbands soccer team float, driving a car with vote yes malama pono signs (thanks Wade Holmes) and my yes hat and shirt, trying to play the yes jam on my iphone. Some people screamed YES. Others stared blankly, no idea of what was going on. But many people met my eyes, nodded, winked, or flashed a shaka to say yup. we get it and we gonna vote. What an amazing day. We are versatile, driven, and creative. We had a team handing out yes brochures to all the attendees. Tonight was a GOOD THING and Im so grateful for all who came. The tide is turning. Radio commercials for YES start tomorrow. I suggest each of you reading this get a VOTE YES shirt and wear it all around the fair... Excellent job today Aina Warriors!!! People on Oahu, why cant we do something like this???
