So a few days ago in the mail I received a letter from Time Warner - TopicsExpress

So a few days ago in the mail I received a letter from Time Warner dated September 15,2014. Across the top of this letter in very large, bold letters it says “We’re pleased to extend you another special offer.” The content of the letter goes on to say that we currently pay $250.24/mo but our new rate will be $337.60/mo effective October 7. It then goes on to say “As a thank you for your continued business…..” Your rate will only be “$290.78/mo., a savings of $46.82/mo”. I guess they consider it a “special offer” to raise your fees by (according to their numbers) by $40.54/mo. On the bottom of the letter is a phone number to call. So I did. I talked to a nice young man named Anthony, no doubt a pseudonym. Its important to understand Anthony took the company line, he didn’t say anything he hadn’t been told to say and I have no ill feelings towards him. He first explained that the letter was wrong. Because my new rate is actually going to be $367.80/mo and in fact currently is that amount except for the “special offer” I’m currently on. When I asked what that “special offer” was, he said it had “no name” but started about a year ago. Hmmmm? According to my last bill, I am indeed paying $250.24 but that is discounted by $138.84/mo from $389.08. Add up the numbers…. I’ve checked several times. Nothing matches anything. He went on to say the “special offer” he can give me after this one ends would cost me $325.68/mo but again he has no name for this “special offer”. So my “special offer” is going to cost me either $40.54/mo, $74.86/mo or ??????. With “special offer” like that we don’t need any price increases do we? All this for Internet service whose “Ultimate 100” package says you’ll get 100Mbps, but in reality I get 22.53Mbps according to their own speed test site . Costing…. well, frankly I’m not sure what. Additionally several years ago we upgraded to Time Warner’s “Turbo” internet speeds. But last month when a service person paid us a visit he dropped a bomb shell on us. He told us the modem we had did not support the faster “turbo” speed. He had no idea why TW didn’t tell us this. But in short we paid for several years for service we didn’t get. On complaint by us they did refund the past year but refused to admit they should have made us aware of the issue. Lets take a worse case scenario… If Google Fiber, which claims Gigabit Internet is degraded by the same percentage as Time Warner, (in other words runs at only 22.5% of what it claims), then Google Fiber will still be running at over 200Mbps, which is still 50 times faster than Time Warner’s best promised, highest costing service. But don’t forget Time Warner is giving you a “Special Offer”! Thoughts?
