So, as a Senior Systems Administrator, I am responsible for the whole of the AOL Active Directory Infrastructure. As such, I was sitting in a Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery planning meeting and was being asked how long it would take a network user to notice a particular disaster scenario and how long it would take to respond. This included things like loss of a single Domain Controller, loss of multiple Domain Controllers, loss of various routers and switches, loss of an entire Data Center, etc. I was then asked about a worst case scenario where we lost every single Data Center at the same time. Well, AOL has Data Centers all across the globe from North America to Europe to Asia. I tried to remain as calm as possible when I responded: If we lost every single Data Center simultaneously, that would pretty much mean that the entire planet is being pulverized and restoring an international computer network would probably not be very high on anyones priority list.
