So excited! The show opens this Saturday! Get to know Elyse Defoor a little more-shes a local Atlantan artist who studio is also housed at The Arts Exchange. Heres what she writes about her work: For over two years I have treated the iconography of the white wedding dress as an emotionally ridden human artifact in my art. My practice has been to create mixed-media installations and photography from a collection of previously worn wedding gowns, allowing the forms to express the weight of our cultural attachment to them as “Relics of Marriage.” Taking a step further, I recently began creating large scale wall hangings; what appear as black on black shed skins of mourning. Always interested in evolution, indicators of the passage of time and costume, I began creating these assemblages in a subconscious counterpoint to the pure white dress forms from the “Relics” Project. While the wedding dresses represent the hopes and dreams of the women who wore them, the works I am creating now are more about a woman’s shedding those dreams of youth, and mourning the loss of the idealization of marriage. I feel that I am still in the early stages of both of these bodies of work and plan to continue investigating the symbols, vestiges and intimate details within each. I am interested in altering their presentation from two-dimensional wall pieces to a more 360 degree environmental experience, much like the installation of hanging dresses which spawned this whole process. While the black on black “After Ever After” series continues to explore the many forms, both hidden and exposed, of the feminine body and spirit that has been central in most all of my work, I am conceptualize new installations and usage of the sculptural and photographic content I am amassing with these concurrent series.
