So frustrated. My sister has been suffering since Monday with nausea, retching, excruciating pain in her abdomen. She went to to ER three times, was admitted Thursday night, had tests yesterday, and today, the doctor tells her, Sorry, we dont know whats wrong. The frustration isnt so much the lack of a diagnosis, but the way she was treated. She was not allowed to eat or drink starting at 6:30 Thursday night, put on a normal diet sometime yesterday, but not informed she could eat until 9:30 yesterday evening. By then, the kitchen was closed, so her first meal in over 24 hours was a white bread turkey sandwich. Her doctor could not be reached until 9:00 am yesterday, and he never bothered to see her until 9:00 this morning. She had an allergic reaction to the pain meds, but that little problem wasnt taken care of until about 6 hours after she brought it to the nurses attention. I had to help her shower because the orderly or aide or whatever he was had another emergency. I am not naming names, but I would like all health professionals to stop and think: what if that was your mother, sister or daughter lying in that bed suffering? What if it was someone you love wondering, Why dont they tell me what is going on? My family has four generations of women in the nursing profession, so I know how it is supposed to be. And this is not it. Regardless of who the patient is and what the circumstances are, patients are human beings first.
