So in plain English why are we seeing a dramatic increase in Thunderstorms over the last few weeks and could we see more of them??? Over the past 2 weeks we have seen Thunderstorms become a daily occurrence throughout Queensland and New South Wales, the Sydney Region alone has seen Storm after storm over the past few days. Whilst Brisbane in still in the process of repairing damaged buildings from the Worst Storm in many Generations!! So why are Storms on the increase and are more intense then usual?? Basically, the wind has been blowing from the north all week. That makes it hot. That northerly wind has also been carrying a bunch of moisture and humidity down from Queensland. That makes it sticky or muggy. There has also been a trough in central New South Wales and Southern Queensland.....No wait... not a big thing that cattle are all drinking from, but a part of the atmosphere which has low air pressure, and which is therefore acting like a giant basin where all the air converges. However all that air has to go somewhere right?? So what happens is, it goes up into the higher levels of the atmosphere, That then turns the moisture into liquid for a bunch of reasons which you probably learned in school if you didnt fall asleep in science class of course :) And because it’s all unstable, you get heaps of thunder and lightning as part of the show which Caboolture will miss anyway! So can We expect more Thunderstorms in our region of coverage? Short Answer: Yes!! So as i just explained above we have a very humid and unstable airmass and that will combine with a series of upper troughs moving east over the state over the next several days that will generate an active phase of showers and storms through many parts of the state until at least mid to late next week This Including Brisbane and the entire South East. Whilst today we didnt see anything more then just a few thundery heavy showers it doesnt mean people should become complacent and think well we are going to miss out and get nothing. We are likely to see multiple days Severe Thunderstorms being a threat for the south East ans Northern New South Wales. However every day is a different setup and the only reason why we didnt see Severe Storms today was due to thick cloud cover whice prevented Surface heating in the lower levels. We will have outlooks during Each morning so please keep an eye out for them and take any Warnings Seriously. ~nick
