So much has been said about Robin Williams in the last couple of days. Posts of friends that met him on USO tours, visits to hospitals. Articles and blogs, radio hosts and TV hosts calling him a coward. It is all a bit overwhelming, but that is not necessarily a negative. I never met the man, dont know that much about his personal life, but it is not hard to understand he was a mental giant if not a genius. His wit, styling and candor is evidence of that. There was something inherently brilliant and unique in every character he portrayed. I rarely react to the passing of celebrities with more than a brief moment of grief for their family and a prayer for peace. Robins death has affected me a bit more as I can understand the pain. Yesterday was a day of mental mourning I have realized, something I have not ever done for someone I have never met. Today I have wept watching a few tributes, my heart feeling the pain of loss. With genius can be a brain that never stops, can never quit thinking, working, analyzing the world. Couple that with depression and it can be disastrous and immensely painful for the person living it daily. Everyone has an opinion as to why his death should not have occurred, at least not yet; therapy, medication, faith. Granted these work for many and it is an intricate balance of these that have saved me from taking my own life. Unless you know this pain personally, have reasonable experience with it, think twice before expressing your opinion. Most people do not understand the deep chasm of depression or other mental illness. It is stigmatized, lonely, most often a desperate place to be. It is biological, organic, not some fabricated nonsense to not conform.
