LUKE 15:8 KJV Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? Light a Lamp For those in His audience who didn’t relate as well to the cost and importance of a sheep to a shepherd, Jesus makes sure they understand how important the lost are to His heavenly Father by telling a new story, this one about a woman who lost a silver coin. We don’t know if she was young or old, a widow or married, but we do know that the coin was valuable to her present and future financial condition. That seems to be on a lot of peoples’ minds today, just as it was back then. But let’s be sure we understand that Jesus isn’t putting a money value on the human soul. In fact, He assumes those present would know how much more valuable life is to silver. So if a woman would stop everything she was doing, light every corner of the house, sweep, and get down on hands and knees to sort through the dust and dirt to find the lost coin, then how much more should we be ready and willing to do to find the lost soul? Remember the context for these parables: Religious leaders were grumbling that He ate with sinners. We all know the importance of the company we keep. We need fellowship with other Christians to encourage our Christian walk. But we are never to turn our back on the lost of the world. Our purpose must be the same as God’s purpose: to seek and save those who are lost. We can’t do the saving, as it is the Holy Spirit’s job to reveal Jesus and His salvation plan, but we can turn on the lights, sweep the floors, and search carefully until we find the precious silver coin that means so much to God that He laid down the life of His Son for its redemption. Help me to never lose sight of how precious each and every person in the world is to you, creator God. Give me a steadfast desire and passion and joy to help find those who are lost!
