So on the bus today.. Weird old lady is sitting next to me and has that nervous chattery disposition.. Im nice to her.. I listen and I acknowledge her. Then a young teenage girl gets on the bus and starts telling her friend (guy) about how bad she feels because she got with 7 guys last night. In the midst of my stomach churning over her self-respect, the old lady starts telling her to zip her jacket up because she claims the girl is dressed indecently. She has jeans on, a black singlet with her midriff just barely showing and an unzipped jacket on. She ignores the old lady and continues conversing with her friends about parties and whatever. The old lady is so perturbed that she tells her to zip up her jacket again for gods sake this time. Now shes really upset and the young girl is feeling pretty u comfortable. At this stage all my churning becomes warrior feminist and I tell the old lady that she cant go around telling girls what they can and cant wear because it offends her. She tells me its against the law to dress indecently and she used to be a lawyer. Women used to get arrested on Bondi beach she says. I say that was 50 years ago and its 2015 now and we have fought long and hard to not feel ashamed of our bodies and that she should keep her opinions to herself. We still have so much work to do as women... I wish I could take this young woman and this old woman and make them love themselves a little more.
