So, really cold this morning. Below freezing. Friday. I arrive early to class and start setting up. A student comes in very early. Sits down and waits for class to begin. He picks up his smartphone, and exclaims, My word of the day app has todays word as clowder. He then tells me the definition of clowder (group of cats - who knew?). We discuss and laugh. Excited by this, he tells the app to give another word. This time, Im to guess. I guess the definition. We talk about the spelling of the word, the root meanings, the definition. This goes on for about 20 words. This is what Mom used to do with me everyday when I grew up. We learned words. Words were power, she said. Tools to use for life. This kid had no idea that Mom was making sure I did not slack off on my vocabulary, just because she was no longer around to quiz me. :-)
