So the other day I posted that my mother had told me a great story, and would post it after I told some friends face-to-face. She is a university professor of Lit, Humanities, and Art History. This happened in her intro class for her Humanities course. She was discussing the importance of medium in art, and how medium makes its own statement. Now, about half the class are American military stationed in Italy, and in this particular class, many are African American. So she asks: How many of you have seen the marble Martin Luther King Monument in Washington, D.C.? No one raised their hand, so she says, Neither have I, but Ive studied the words of Dr. King and I KNOW the words of Dr. King, and Im pretty sure he never said, I have dream that Ill be memorialized as a giant white man. People, that marble is chalk white! Now, given that the reason hes being memorialized is because of color, dont you think having it cast in bronze would have been the better choice? Students got uncomfortable for a moment, and then it hit them: Yes, medium in art matters. Does anyone have any thoughts on my mothers disappointment in the chosen medium? Travis Ogle, youre a sculptor (and a DAMN fine one!), what do you think?
