So, there I was, about nine miles in, hills, heat, hills, heat and starting to lack essential nutrients when the wise words of Alan Mann came to me - you are never without salt, you sweat it out, just lick your arms. Which is what I did with a smug, if slightly eccentric air, only to spend the next hundred yards literally gagging on the metallic and strangely unappetising taste of Nivea Factor Thirty sun cream. I was only able to halt the heaving by shoving my head in a stream, which did not entirely remove the taste, but reduced it sufficient to finish the race without vomitory incident.
