So there has been some controversy surrounding the new Common Core - TopicsExpress

So there has been some controversy surrounding the new Common Core standards in public education, a lot of it coming from the right (of course) and some from the christian community. However, there are some christians that are actually supporting it because it will teach critical thinking in a word based faith. They believe that teaching kids to read more in depth will help them to understand the bible better. Oh the irony. Keep on encouraging those kids to read the bible more thoroughly, because that is exactly what it takes to turn someone away from faith and into reason and logic. Most atheists I know (such as myself) became atheists when they decided to intently read the bible for themselves instead of listening to what a preacher said the passages mean. I posit that the reason why there are still so many fundamentalists that take every scripture literally is because they do not know how to read it for themselves and take the words of their pastors as the sole truth because they are either too lazy to read it for themselves or because they simply do not (or cannot) understand it and they just believe that a man in a suit behind a pulpit knows what it is supposed to mean and that is all they need to know. So, I for one usher in this common core standard and really want these kids to pick up a bible, read it, scrutinize it, and finally be able to decide for themselves what it means to them. A christian that has the ability to cognitively read the passages of the bible is not going to fair as well for their faith as these people think. christianitytoday/ct/2013/june-web-only/good-news-of-common-core.html?start=2
