So twenty-two years ago, just like tonight, I was writing lesson plans. I was WAY ahead of the game, since my baby girl wasnt due until October the 18th, but I wanted to have them finished. In one sitting, I planned an entire six-week unit on Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. About 1 AM I finished and felt like a huge weight had been lifted. Went to school Monday bragging about being so ahead of the game. Then something weird happened. I asked a teacher nearby, How do you know if your water breaks? The reply? Oh, GIRL, you will KNOW if your water breaks, no doubt about it!! An hour later, I walked down to the nurse and asked the same question. That baby hasnt even dropped yet. Shes just stepping on your bladder. Go buy some Depends. Yikes! TMI; I know! I wasnt thrilled, either. An hour later, the school receptionist (who had never had a baby) says to me, I think you ought to call your OBGYN, just in case. So I did. He wanted me to come into the office. I drove myself. (Couldnt locate my husband; pre cell-phone days) Next thing I know he says, Go next door and check into Labor and Delivery; you need to deliver in the next 24 hours or were taking a risk. Umm... but my lesson plans werent for Sept. 29; they were for October 18!!! My cute little packed for the hospital suitcase WAS packed, but it was at home, next to the couch, you know for when it was TIME to go into labor. Needless to say, I had a beautiful baby girl in the next 24 hours who would be a shining light in my life. Not my time, but His-- its always perfect! I love you, Kate Aten. I hope your birthday tomorrow is duly celebrated with friends, snot-shooting, pants-wetting laughter, and a full measure of ALL the love youve put out there in the universe, pressed down shaken together, and sent back to you on every surf-riding wave!!
