So wax in hand youre now ready to sticky up that board: How to wax a surfboard If its a new board ensure theres no dust on it or if youre applying a fresh coat to your existing board remove the old wax by applying a cleaner like the Dewaxit Surfboard Wax Remover and use a quality wax scraper like the Endless Wave Wax Buddy, which will make life a lot easier. Use a hard base coat applying it to the clean surfboard deck (not the base!!), using a straight motion across the board from side to side. Short boards can be waxed over the lower 2/3 of the board and longboards covered from nose to tail. Then take your top coat surfboard wax and apply in circular or straight motions over the base coat and small bumps of wax should start to form. Do this until theres a reasonable coverage (see photo) and youre ready to go surfing! Once the wax has been on the board for a while it will start to go smooth and offer less grip. When this happens use the teeth of a wax comb to score a cross hatch pattern into the wax to provide extra traction. Remember adding too many wax coats will add weight to a surfboard and it wont work as effectively, so clean the board off on a regular basis before applying a fresh new layer.
