So we have another adventure to add to our list of interesting travel stories over the years. The bus we were traveling on from Athens to Patras was stopped on a freeway and boarded by 8-10 heavily armed men with machine guns pointed and pistols drawn. All shouting loudly in Greek, a language we clearly dont understand. At this stage I thought we were being robbed as they wore no markings identifying them as police or military personnel. It also crossed our minds they were terrorists. A look of panic overtook the faces of the people on the bus, including the mostly Greek passengers. No one knew what was happening. They proceeded to loudly interrogate 4 men sitting 3-4 seats behind us and it wasnt until the second group of armed men arrived wearing bullet proof vests with police markings that we knew they were law enforcement. It took a very tense minute or two before the men were restrained with handcuffs and lead from the bus. An plain clothed police offer with a glock proceeded to aggressively ask every male passenger their nationality, including me. Two more people were restrained and removed from the bus. IDs were taken from another 4 young men all while officers searched the luggage racks. In the meantime a small battalion of motorcycle police, unmarked police cars and members of an assault team formed around the bus. It took 10 minutes or so before the bus started moving with a plain clothes detective riding shot gun until the bus reached the depot 5 minutes later. Think this one tops earthquakes in Tokyo, a ship roll in a hurricane in the Atlantic, camping near plane crashes in Amsterdam and bush fires in Tasmania.
