So, we saw Gone Girl. Directed by David Fincher, based on the novel by Gillian Flynn. The novel itself was on the Bestseller list a couple of years back and the movie has come pretty close on its heels. A suspense- thriller, its more a whatdunhe than a whodunnit, the movie is a varying roaming narrative between the two main protagonists as everyone else tries to prise the truth from the situation.Nick Dunne(Ben Affleck) and his wife Amy( Rosamund Pike) are both writers. They. Meet in New York at the height of Amys success-shes the writer of Amazing Amy series of childrens books- beautiful, brilliant( read Ivy League decorated) - and they fall in love with the picture perfect marriage . The recession, lay-offs from jobs forces them to move back to his home in Missouri when his mother becomes unwell. The movie opens at his 5th marriage anniversary- in a bar he runs with his twin sister-played by Carie Coon-( started from the remains of her trust fund) and the day goes on to reveal a missing wife- abducted ,murdered or plain disappeared- shes a Gone Girl alright! He calls in the cops, the investigations start. The narrative sways between his and hers, unravelling the secrets in their lives, the problems in their marriage, and the constant media spotlight that has tried and delivered a verdict before a case, charge or a body can be found. The story winds on - no not to a predictable close, but an ending that leaves many questions too...... Its always good to let the author do the screenplay, which is excellent and the ever changing pace of the narrative keeps you charged throughout the movie.David Finchers direction is slick and he keeps you glued to the screen throughout. The effects are good, visuals effective, and a very defining background score throughout. Yet, the greatest strength is the cast- Ben Affleck is powerfully natural as the imperfect man and husband, a little uncaring, a little unemotional- but is he a murderer? His twin sister played by Carrie Coon is equally impressive with a possible Supporting Actress nomination in sight. But the screen belongs to Rosamund Pike with probably her best performance to date- as Amazing Amy Dunne she shows off many facets to a character which without the finesse of her ability could have easily lapsed into cheap sensationalism. Shades of Jodie Foster, this could well be the Oscar winning performance of the year. This is not edge ofthe seat suspense where you choke on you popcorn or hold your hand in the air unable to spare the concentration to pick from the bowl, but a suspense that grows ,a plot that thickens and thins , keeps you guessing, doesnt let your mind dwell on some obvious inconsistencies- like how come her car is also missing- and finally when you walk out of the theatre its not in reflective solitude, but questions and answers and discussions are in the air. The trial by media, the public intrusion and judgements even before any real information are realistic and representative of modern society. Iam glad I hadnt read the book before- the many twists in this tale and the powerful performances are certainly reason to watch it at the cinema-Many many reasons to highly recommend-. Gone Girl- Rosamund Pike- You Go Girl!!
