So.. why isnt the CIA torture report blowing up everyones feed today? Lets count the reasons! 1. It makes both republicans and democrats look bad, so theres no partisan fun to be had. 2. Theres no plucky heroes to cheer for - only career politicians (like Feinstein) that spent years supporting the CIAs excesses before this report. 3. Theres no smug self-righteousness to make us feel better. It was us doing this - our country and our money. 4. The solution isnt more government or less taxes. 5. Nearly every major media outlet (especially NYT!) spent years happily repeating the lies and doublespeak that kept these facts hidden, and would rather not have to admit their part. 6. The actual details are, in many cases, too grisly or unspeakable (anal feeding, broken bones, holding mentally disabled family members for ransom) to be repeated on the nightly news. 7. Theres no real debate to be had, since the report is made up entirely of undisputed internal CIA records. 8. Theres no happy ending. The CIA tortured and murdered people (both guilty and innocent), yet could come up with no credible examples of quality information from these actions. They lied to both the President and Congress about what they were doing, then spied on the Senate as this report was being gathered. No one has been punished for *any* of this, and likely never will. I dont want to think about that, and doubt anyone else does either. 9. Its not political. It just isnt. This is basic human decency and a lot of ass-covering. Im ashamed of Obama, Bush & Cheneys reactions, and proud of Feinstein, McCain, Udall, and others from both sides of the aisle. It baffles me to see this sort of thing - an agency out of control, lying to the president and congress - spun as something partisan, to be dismissed because it embarrasses those involved. So, yeh - social media is a great tool for political action, huh? Just make sure your story fits the mold..
