So will someone TRY to tell me again that Republicans arent out to suppress the votes of black people? Apparently, for the first time in Georgia state history, there will be at least one county that will open up balloting on a Sunday. In an effort to boost turnout, DeKalb County — the state’s richest source of Democratic votes — is about to name Oct. 26 as an extra day to vote, as well as a day of rest. Other counties are expected to do the same Commonly referred to as Souls to Polls it has been an excepted practice to open polls on Sundays to make it easier for people to go from church to their polling place. The reasoning is simple: Most of these people work during the week day and it is hard, if not impossible, to get off work in time to make it to their polling place. Most of these people cannot afford to take time off, and a lot of them just dont have the transportation to do so. So they go to church, and after church they get into a church van or bus and head to their polling place to vote. It gives access to the polls that these people wouldnt otherwise have available to them -- even being fully and properly registered with all their attendant ID. I mean, these people should be allowed a chance to vote, right? Apparently NOT, according to Georgia State Senator Fran Millar, a Republican. He is ANGRY that a bunch of black people might be given access to the polls -- so much so that he wants to stop it before it is too late. Suddenly hes found that separation of church and state argument... ..... Now we are to have Sunday voting at South DeKalb Mall just prior to the election. Per Jim Galloway of the AJC, this location is dominated by African American shoppers and it is near several large African American mega churches such as New Birth Missionary Baptist. Galloway also points out the Democratic Party thinks this is a wonderful idea – what a surprise. I’m sure Michelle Nunn and Jason Carter are delighted with this blatantly partisan move in DeKalb. Is it possible church buses will be used to transport people directly to the mall since the poll will open when the mall opens? If this happens, so much for the accepted principle of separation of church and state. ---- Gee, it isnt like a church to tell its parishioners how to vote. I mean, it is unheard of for a church to get involved in politics, right? Churches do not become polling places, do they? I am pretty certain that Sen. Fran Millar wouldnt have had a problem if this had been in a Right-leaning, predominately white county. But no, HE is having a fit because the majority of these voters are BLACK. You dont have to be an expert in sentence diagramming to see in his statement that is EXACTLY his beef -- these people are *gasp* black. And by golly, he is not going to let that happen, not on HIS watch. Instead of simply of pushing for more access to the polls all across the state -- which the law already allows -- he wants to restrict access to the polls. Because that is the ONLY way Republicans can win. electionlawblog.org/?p=65154
