So yesterday I set my alarm for 6:30 am, to get up and go out to Fort DeSoto to spread the rest of Mollys ashes at the dog park/dog beach, which was her most favorite place in the whole world. When the alarm went off at 6:30, I got up and fed the cat, and then went back to bed. Then at 10:30 I made myself go, because I figured if I didnt go yesterday Id just keep putting it off. But 10:30 was the wrong time to go, we always left the house at 7 am, got to the park by 8, chased birds and swam till 9, and then headed home. I went anyway. I cried on the way there, thinking about how much she loved it. Once there, I walked all the way through the fenced park, scattering her ashes along the way. Then went out to the dog beach. There must have been close to 80 dogs there - the main reason we always went really early, because Molly didnt like when there were too many dogs. I hadnt gone more than 20 steps when I looked over at a bench where an older couple were sitting - and saw an Irish setter with a white face just like Mollys! In all the years wed gone there, Id only ever seen one setter, and that was probably 10 years ago. I couldnt believe it. I walked over and told the couple I had just lost my Molly and I had to come say hello to their girl. She was 13 years old and almost as sweet as my Molly. I cried and cried, and then couldnt help but think that if I had gotten up and left the house at 7 I never would have seen her. So there was a reason I didnt leave early, and there was a reason she was there at the park for me to see. I walked to the far end of the beach that we always played at, away from the crowds of dogs, and scattered her ashes on the beach and in the water. And then I cried some more. But I still had one more thing I needed to do. Id brought one of Mollys tennis balls with me, one that she found in the hedge across the street from the tennis courts. Shed go all the way in the hedge and come out with a ball in her mouth! I walked back down the beach looking for just the right dog. When a young chocolate lab saw the ball in my hand and came running to me, I knew she was the new owner of the tennis ball. I hope she has as much fun at the beach as Molly had over the last 10+ years.
