So...you plan a day and you are going to get all this stuff done. The phone rings, and it is a toll-free number. I usually dont answer, but this time I did. Lady, I am looking for Susan Altop. Me, Yes, this is me. Lady identifies herself as Frannie from Ally Bank. She is in the fraud dept. She asks if I have tried to open an account with them? I responded with a, no. She went on to explain that there was a suspicious applicant that had my name, address, birthdate, social security all correct. She had called the phone number to verify the applicant, and it was a disconnect. That was a red flag. She started researching and found me. Her advise to me was to call all the three credit reporting agencies immediately, and add a fraud alert. You actually only have to do it online, and they communicate with each other for the fraud alert. A few things she said to watch for is: 1. If you suddenly recieve a piece of mail that says you are approved for a card or denied a card. I received a denial letter in Dec that I had not applied for, but I already had an account with them, so I just dismissed it as an error on their part. 2. You can contact all three of the credit reporting agencies, and put a 90-day fraud alert on your identity. 3. I only have Capital One CC, and they put a verbal password on my account. If there is an suspicious activity with my name and social, it will red flag and they will call me. So much for getting anything done today :( 4. She did not say this, but I observed that Experian had all security questions that did not apply to me. I could not even get on with them because I could not answer their random questions. That is a RED FLAG! I have apply to for the report through the mail to get it by sending my arm, leg, and first born to prove I am me before they send my report. No money has been taken and no one seems to have been able open an account in my name so far. SO MUCH FOR MY DAY :) Finding joy in all I do...I talked to a lot of very nice people today :) It is all good anyway... life goes on...
