Soda Butte. In The Valley of the Wolves. A very special place that seems to have a vibrant energy of its own, even though this geyser formation has been inactive for many years. Thats why is looks like a mini-volcano. I have seen all kinds of wildlife here - perhaps here more than anywhere else. Wolves, bears, buffalo, elk, many ducks and geese that swim the warm creek that flows behind it, and many more. This was the place of my first encounter with the wolves, back in the late 1990s. Only a few years since the wolves had been reintroduced to Yellowstone, let me tell you -- it was hard to see and find them back then. On this particular trip I looked for days -- never so much as a howl. On my way out of the park I stopped at the pull-out here, and as I ate a sandwich and studied my map the wolves just started howling from both side of the valley! I will never forget that feeling: standing all alone and having at least 20 wolves howling - and I think they were howling at me! :)
