Some group of idiots on another facebook page got to talking about medical emergencies at Camp. It got me to thinking about some of the horrible things I have seen over the years in Boy Scout camps. A few years ago at Brady Saunders we had a very strange incident. It was during the first full day of camp, a Sunday afternoon and we managed to have 2 copperhead bites in the first fifteen minutes of operation. The first was a kid who was sitting right in front of the Health Lodge. He was dangling his hand down into an old planter box that was full of wildflowers. There were 20 other kids within 10 feet of the boy. He said that he felt something sting him and we started checking and found a two foot copperhead coiled up beside where he was sitting. Sure enough he began to display symptoms of snake bite, blood was actually seeping back up out of the bite, an anti coagulant effect and the kid was in a lot of pain. The rescue squad was called and they arrived very quickly and took the kid away and out to St Marys Hospital. Ten minutes later i got a call on my cell that there was a copperhead bite in camp. I said That is old news, that kid is long gone already The health officer assured me that this was yet another victim, the one and only Robert Russo our Nature director. it turns out that Robert had tried to catch a newborn or year-old copperhead down at the swamp. Those little guys are tough to handle and it managed to twist its head and bite Bobby on the finger. We called the local rescue squad and this call created a lot of general confusion at the squad. It turns out that the best team had come in and gotten the first kid and now they were sending in the B team. A driver and an EMT on her first rescue call. we transported Bobby up to the camp entrance to meet the unit and they came rolling in with lights flashing and siren blaring. After a brief triage they decided it would be best to give Bobby an intravenous drip although i dont know what good this would do. There were three staff members and Bobby and the new trainee. This girl who name was Ethel tried to find an artery in Bobbys little anorexic arm. She jabbed into Bobby so hard that the needle came out the other side of his arm. Bobby was very patient as she tried again. This time she got close but still no luck. Evidently Bobby had no circulatory system like most people. Ethel stabbed him a total of six times until Bobby finally stood up, walked out of the truck and said you know what, the snake bite was not too bad but the cure is about to kill me. We sent Ethel back to Goochland and somebody drove Bobby to the Hospital. He did not have a very serious bite. The worst thing I ever saw in a scout camp was 2 kids at camp Powhatan back in the late 60s. These two idiots thought that it would be a good idea to stick a ten penny nail all the way down the inside of their penis. Once they got it in they evidently could not pull it out. It is hard enough to locate one kid who thinks that this is a great thing to try, but to find 2 of them in the same tent in highly unlikely. I have never done this procedure myself but one of the side effects is that you can no longer walk without considerable pain. I wish that I was making this up but it is true. I have to wonder what kind of conversation led to this incident, Hey, you wanna go fishing,No. How about a trip to the trading post? No, you wanna make a pair of indian mocassins? No. Ok, I have an idea, why dont we stick a 10 penny nail as far as we can up our private parts? That could be interesting.
