Some have asked about the medical care provided for the animals at the pound, so I thought I would try to respond to that. The County POUND was set up as an impound facility to take stray dogs and unwanted dogs and cats to be euthanized. It is not an animal control facility. They hold the animals for a few days to see if the owner comes for them. We have a local Rescue group that Tammie runs who works with this pound to save as many as we can. The County does not fund food nor medical care for these animals. Some of us help with our own funds as much as we can, but we rely on donations from the community to help make ends meet. When animals come into the facility they are not evaluated and given medical care unless it is done by the rescue and foster folks. When Hope arrived at the facility, she was placed in a room in hopes that one of us would come by and help her. The day to day operations are run by inmates from the County Jail which is next door to the pound. The county has one employee who oversees the pound in addition to other duties for the county. So theres NO medical funding at this facility. Tammie has an arrangement with a local vet to give discounts and allow her to charge the services and pay them as we get money. I try to take care of most of the medical care of the fosters I take in to help out Tammie with the hundreds that they are trying to help. My little bit is not much, but every little bit helps. My vet trained me many years ago to do most minor medical care and injections, so I can help with much of this myself, such as doing the fluids for Hope, which is a cost saving. Tammie is very good at spotting medical issues and getting pound babies to the doctor when needed. We have few local and state laws governing animals, as I am told, and the ones we do have are not enforced, so the pound is filled with puppies and young dogs as the parents run the streets breeding and repopulating. We have a serious problem, and it seems officials do not see it, or turn and look the other way. Animals have come into the pound so severely eaten up with mange that they had no hair left, but with Tammies determination to save every one she can, I have seen some come back to life with beautiful coats. So to answer some of the questions I have been asked recently, had I not just HAPPENED into the pound Wednesday, Hope would have likely died. Had Tammie not pointed me to Sarahs cage this summer, she would have died. And had Tammie not stood up for Oakley, he would likely spend his life in pain as his leg dangled along behind him. Ladies like Tammie and Bonita do all this for free. This is NOT a paying job for any of the rescuers and fosters, it is actually a pretty big expense for most, but the rewards are something that money cant buy. I hope this helps explain why we are always scrounging around for help with these babies, and also explains why the pound is not providing the medical treatment.
