Some takeaways from the Euro-trip with Elizabeth Chesley Covert: 1) Luxembourg rocks. As someone with a functional knowledge of both German and French, I was really comfortable communicating there--esp. since most everyone not only spoke at least some of both, but also some English. My impression of the Luxembourgeois is that they are to the French as the Canadians are to the Americans. 2) Brittany reminded me a lot of Cornwall...not surprising, since they are both constituent parts of imperialist nations, with closely related Celtic languages and much the same topography. More beaches in Brittany, more moors in Cornwall. Although Breton is a functioning community language and Cornish is only spoken in a restored form, I didnt hear any Breton spoken in the streets (unlike with Irish, Welsh, and Scots Gaelic). 3) As a fan of the novel PILLARS OF THE EARTH, it was really something to spend some quality time with Chartres Cathedral. It is overwhelming to look at some of the more ornate stone carvings--esp. on the choir enclosure--knowing how they were executed.
