Some words to my son as he leaves for Rutgers today, I will try to - TopicsExpress

Some words to my son as he leaves for Rutgers today, I will try to be brief. I don’t know what you can expect living in a dorm at college. Mom and I got our degrees attending college at night while working full time during the day. Make the most of this opportunity being given to you. Learn… one of my college professors once told the class that education is the one thing where people don’t want to get their money’s worth. (We were trying to get him to let us out early from class to start a holiday). Get our money’s worth. Be generous… not with money, but with your attention and time. The friends you make this way will be there for you if the money becomes scarce. Find something that you are passionate about and take courses to try to make a career with it. If you can do that you will never work a day in your life. Be kind… for kindness gives us our humanity. If you see someone who appears shy and overwhelmed by the experience, befriend them. Be sensible… if something doesn’t feel right don’t do it. Don’t let Peer pressure make you do something that you don’t want to do. Be reliable… always lend a helping hand when needed, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Know that your mom and I love you and will help you in any way that we can. Make some time for you…you will be busy with school and friends but sometimes solitude can be a nice break to relax and unwind from the pressure of college life. Finally, call your mom …often. Even if it’s to ask for money… she will be so happy to hear your voice instead of reading your texts.
