Something I just posted to my personal feed... Thoughts? This - TopicsExpress

Something I just posted to my personal feed... Thoughts? This is perhaps the most important post I will make this year... I believe that what is discussed in the attached podcast link is absolutely true. I experienced this first-hand throughout my career, beginning in school and continuing into industry after graduation. I also believe that it is not limited to ANY PARTICULAR minority group, but rather applies in a more exclusive way to any individual who doesnt look like those already established in a field. It can happen to anyone who deviates from the expected (enforced?) stereotype for that field. I have been saying, for decades now, that the academics who made careers out of studying geniuses to determine what made them superior to non-geniuses (and yes, Im talking to YOU Howard Gardner of Harvard University), helped foster the ridiculous notion that deep education is only for a tiny fraction of our people. This insidious weeding out of the intellectual others has woefully under-served generations of normal people who could be serving the greater good with their own innate creativity and talent. It prevented converting our society from one where innovations and breakthroughs (and the subsequent wealth and status associated with invention) are possible for only a tiny fraction of our citizens to a society where everyone functions to their full capability. For many years, I heard this message from those with the authority to open the doors to higher education or to higher positions in the work world. And for those many years, I believed that the message was complete hoo ha. The message plays well to the general public and teaches many to give up before they even get started, but I am here to tell you that maybe the best thing you can do is think of those authorities as the Dread Pirate Roberts who, every evening before you both retire, says Goodnight Wesley, Ill likely kill you in the morning. Well dont you believe it! As a matter of fact, get up the next morning (earlier than Roberts) and DARE him to boot you out! If you are brave, and you defiantly keep learning (despite the suppression you may experience along the way) you may one day find yourself WAY beyond where you thought you would be. So listen to this podcast. Listen hard. Then muster your courage, say F%#!k THAT! to authority and carry the hell on! sciencefriday/segment/01/16/2015/does-the-innate-genius-stereotype-widen-the-stem-gender-gap.html#path/segment/01/16/2015/does-the-innate-genius-stereotype-widen-the-stem-gender-gap.html
