Sometimes its us moms that learn from our kids what they need to be happy. Read this story from May I Be Excused, My Brain is Full - Olivias Aspergers Story: Im not that happy about the white stuff currently falling from the sky...but we did manage to find snow pants and hats and mitts amidst the morning chaos...so Im calling that a win Liv proclaimed that she was an ice princess, dressed all in ???, right down to her (left blank intentionally) and silver lipstick...with a blue flower in her hair So thats appropriate... Hahahahahaha I just nodded and went back to making lunches Heres the growth, people... In years gone by, I would have been mortified and I would have marched her straight back upstairs to change into something conventional, something MATCHING, something plain, something unnoticeable...something NORMAL. She would have lost her mind and melted right down until we were both exhausted, emotionally hurt and barely able to go ahead with day... And why... Because I thought it would be better and easier for her...AND for me, if Im being brutally honest. If she was less noticeable, people would accept her better even if she was a bit quirky and temperamental and volatile...at least shed look the part of a regular kid... That sounds awful to me now but I really was trying to save her from grief and whispers and snickers and judgement...and I think I was trying to save myself from those same damned things... Well guess what? My kid is awesome. She is funny and witty and wise beyond her years. She is unconventional and bright and cool and polite and honest and caring and helpful and the list goes on and on...kinda like pie 3.14............ So, I guess Ive learned a few things... If she likes white go-go boots and silver lipstick...if that makes her comfortable and demonstrates her creativity and her awesome sense of self. If she identifies herself in this way...and is happy?
