Sorry to say but Muslims are slowly becoming traditional in their approach towards Islam. Firstly, I would like to mention that there has been no true religion except Islam from Adam (AS) to Muhammad (PBUH). All of the prophets were Muslims and their religion was Islam. Quran clearly says about it. Second thing is that all Holy books have been amended except Quran as Allah Himself has taken responsibility for the latters protection from deletion and addition. Coming towards the point, it is not evident from the history of Muslims anywhere that candles litting was part of their worship. Even orthodox Christians will tell you that there has been no religious basis for lighting candles in Christianity. However, Jews may support it on religious grounds. They may support their point from Torah. But in reality, the lighting of candle was started by Bani Israel to avoid stumbling during meetings, oftenly of religious nature at night; it had no religious support. However, it was mistakenly adopted as a religious duty. Later on, it became part of their religious rituals. Christians adopted it in recent history and their several rituals in Church starts with it. On the other hand, Hinduism terms the lighting of Diya as religious obligation. Temples of Hindus are lit with these Diyas (candles). They consider fire a holy object representing one of their godesses. They start their day with the warmth of fire from Diya. They burn the dead bodies of their people. Similarly, Parsis worship the Fire and the Sun as they perceive them gods as per their religion. However, in Islam, Hell is made of fire, where the sinful people and non-believers including infidels and hypocrites will go. In short, there is no religious support for lighting candles in Islam, and Islam warns against the things that it has not asked for or the things that do not have any good for the religion.
