Speech shared by Melissa Rockwood at the Toastmasters International Meeting on January 29, 2014 at the American Legion Hall: About 25 years ago, a group of parents and community-minded citizens met and organized, wrote grants, raised thousands of dollars, and petitioned the Town of Bar Harbor for use of an idle, multi-purpose building at the corner of Eden and Mt. Desert Streets. Finally, in September of 1990, on what must be one of the busiest corners on MDI, Kids Corner opened its doors. In Kids Corners early years, I served as a Board Member. For about nine months in 1992-1993, I was privileged to serve as Interim Director. It was during that time that Lori Krupke was one of the group of candidates for Preschool room Teacher. She was young, full of enthusiasm and enthralled with the joys of childhood development. She still is! Its no surprise to me that within several years, Lori became Director of Kids Corner. Under her Leadership, the Center has thrived. I would challenge anyone, anywhere to find a daycare center with faculty turnover as low as Kids Corners. It may seem, after this brief introduction, that after more than twenty years at Kids Corner, Loris job must be easy. But I guarantee you, that every day that she and her staff walk through those doors, new challenges and wonders await them. All three of our children are Kids Corner alumni. Ive been told that public school classroom Teachers can always identify a Kids Corner graduate. They are socially well adjusted, inquisitive, life-long learners. For their commitment to children, doing everything from feeding, diaper changing, potty training, singing, playing, planting and harvesting gardens, the list goes on and on- please raise your glasses in a toast: To Kids Corner: In 2015, they will celebrate 25 years of genuine love and caring for generations of MDI-area children and families.
