Speer and Speer Lumber Merchants, formerly the Canoga Park location of the Hammond Lumber Company Hammond Lumber opened this location in 1913, along the S.P. tracks, north of Sherman Way - the address became 7233 Deering Ave. Dick Speer began his employment here in 1917, and managed this location for 37 years. In March of 1957, Dick and his son Howard purchased the site from Hammond, and re-named the business Speer and Speer Lumber Merchants. Both Dick and Howard were community minded individuals; Dick was Chamber of Commerce President in 1932, and Howard was president in 1962.
