St. James Infirmary In the Standells 1967 “Try It” album, - TopicsExpress

St. James Infirmary In the Standells 1967 “Try It” album, considered by some to be one of our best, I sang a version of St. James Infirmary, which has received accolades from many rock fans. For some reason (and I cant explain why), I really felt a deep connection to the song. The history of the song is every bit as interesting as “The House of the Rising Sun”. As JazzStandards puts it: “The song can be traced back to 19th century England and a folksong called “The Unfortunate Rake” which spawned several versions based on the same story line but with variations in the lyric. Basically the lyric is about a soldier or sailor who has just come from the infirmary where he has viewed the corpse of his lady friend. Walker speculates that St. James Hospital which treated lepers in London was the basis for the infirmary in the title.” https://youtube/watch?v=N1sfJcGNtDM For more history on St. James Infirmary, go here: bestofneworleans/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A34686
