And yes, I know whereof I speak! In our family, piano lessons began at age seven, and they did not stop when the novelty wore off and plunking through “London Bridge” ceased to be fun. There was no letup just because the required forty-five minutes of practice time started to feel like it stretched from after breakfast into eternity. I well remember puttering around my bedroom wishing that just once Mom would forget to call upstairs, “Time to practice!” Sticking with it was not optional, even though it was soon apparent that I was not a junior Van Cliburn. The practice sessions and the weekly lessons went right on, and I ended up learning something besides how to work my way through “The Starlight Waltz.” I learned that in order to achieve any worthwhile goal, you have to keep going forward. In our Christian lives, the purpose to endure is far from being an option. It is an absolute must! It will mean pushing through the temptation of, “I’m feeling a little discouraged, so why not quit?” It will mean holding on when the excitement fades and disciplined Christian living does not look alluring. It will mean fighting to maintain your spiritual momentum when the realities of life seem to be an amazing drag. It will mean hanging onto hope when you feel like you are running on empty. It will mean battling through burnout and fighting spiritual fatigue whenever it strikes. The good news is that you can succeed! Check out the encouraging words of our focus verse, written by the Apostle Paul. Your efforts to persevere will not be in vain! Make up your mind today that you are going to be one who makes it to the finish line. Tighten your belt a notch and head for it with renewed determination. And whatever you do, don’t join the ranks of quitters!
