Stop Comparing Yourself in Six Steps: 1. Comparing yourself is a merely a bad habit. You can, with practice, break it. Its nothing but the ego resisting focus on your own growth and development. When you feel awful for comparing yourself to others or to your former self, look up at the horizon of your own goals, then down at the location of your own feet, and take a step. Repeat. Make this a practice, and youll start comparing your strategies against each other for their usefulness at realizing your goals. 2. Everyone is different FOR A VERY GOOD REASON. You may not know it yet, and you wont be able to know it if you compare yourself to someone else, or to yourself in the past. Who you are is of the utmost importance, and what is happening is of critical necessity for your betterment, even if you dont feel it yet. Comparison is only useful in understanding where you are against what most effectively propels you forward. 3. Stop being afraid to be yourself. What is uniquely you is your most powerful asset and virtue. You dont even need to know what that it or be able to define it. Authenticity feels vulnerable and even foolish, but if youre brave enough to unabashedly be yourself, youll discover your true integrity and character... and so will everyone else. Youre perfect as you are, but need some improvement, so take a step, fall, get up, repeat. 4. When you find that youre comparing yourself, laugh it up, let it go and get it going. You WILL compare yourself, because its the egos job to compare. But its the ego out of control, if you let it compare you to others or to your prior self. The egos job is to compare the success of your actions/thoughts/behaviors against each other to determine which is the most effective for realizing your goals. Its a great navigator; but dont let it drive the bus. 5. Deal with change by embracing it as an opportunity. You get what you want, or you get something better. Always. Things WILL change, and you may feel that youve lost something better than what you have now. Remember that THIS is here for the BEST reason imaginable, even if you never understand it during this lifetime. Someone will always be bigger, stronger, faster, smarter, cuter, wealthier, tougher, younger, older, etc... because the ego is out of control. Compare your actions/thoughts/behaviors against each other to see if theyre carrying you toward your goals. 6. What makes you fulfilled in the long-term is infinitely better than what pleases you in the short-term. Its so easy to be derailed into short-term pleasure over long-term satisfaction. Dont get sucked into the quick fix, because its not; quick is broken. If you compare yourself to others, or to a prior self, you get distracted. Its okay. Just look back up at your own unique horizon, then back down at your own feet. And take another step. Step after step, the journey happens. very respectfully, Scott Sonnon facebook/scottsonnon
