Storm surge warning up IN CADIZ, SAN CARLOS Tropical storm - TopicsExpress

Storm surge warning up IN CADIZ, SAN CARLOS Tropical storm Domeng has weakened to tropical depression and has also reduced its speed and continues to move west northwest, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said yesterday. The Department of Science and Technology’s Project Noah (Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards) yesterday, on the other hand, released a list of areas where storm surges may occur because of Tropical Storm “Domeng” (international name: Peipah). The areas cited in the list included barangays in Cadiz and San Carlos cities in Negros Occidental. In Cadiz City the barangays are 4 Poblacion, Daga, Luna, and Tiglawigan, Cadiz, while in San Carlos they are Guadalupe, San Juan, VI, Buluangan, and Ermita. PAGASA weather forecaster Alvin Pura said that as of 4 p.m. yesterday , “Domeng” was spotted some 670 km East of Davao City (6.7°N 132.0°E) with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near center. He said that Domengs speed has reduced from 15 kph to 13 kph yesterday afternoon and continues to move west northwest. Pura said that due to wind convergence caused by Domeng, some parts of Mindanao and eastern and Central Visayas will experience cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and isolated thunderstorms in the next 24 hours. He said the eastern portions of the Visayas and Mindanao would be the initial areas projected to feel its effect starting Wednesday while Domeng continues to move closely. And if “Domeng” will maintain its present direction and speed, Pura said, it may make landfall over the eastern section of Northern Mindanao or in Surigao provinces by Thursday. The Eastern Visayas provinces were the areas devastated by super typhoon “Yolanda” last November. Pura advised residents in these areas to be prepared and closely monitor the weather situation. He added once it makes landfall it is expected to weaken into low pressure area and may dissipate. He said numerical models were only showing that the cyclone may slow down, prolonging its stay inside the PAR. Every April, PAGASA expects “zero to one” cyclone to affect the country. He said the last time the country had a storm inside the Philippine territory during the same period was in 2011 and was named “Amang.” However, he noted that it was only a tropical depression and did not make landfall. Meanwhile, Pura said that Domeng will not affect parts of Luzon including Metro Manila as they continue to experience fair weather in the next two days. He said except for Cagayan Valley, the rest of the country including Metro Manila will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening. Due to tail end of cold front, Cagayan Valley will experience cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and isolated thunderstorms. PAGASA said moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over northern and eastern section of the country and the coastal waters along this area will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate winds coming from the northeast to east with slight to moderate seas. *PNA
