Story by Rebecca Passingan We will know by September if we will be expecting more floods and disasters because of the La Nina Season. According to weather expert Jimmy Gomoga who is with PNG Weather Service this is because by September the sea surface temperature (SST) in the Western Pacific which also covers PNG, Indonesia, Japan and the others becomes colder. Gomoga explained that the current warm sea surface temperature started last year and is expected to change by September. According to satellite images received by the PNG Weather Services the clouds that indicate the warm SST which is usually situated around Nauru has moved towards PNG because of the winds thus indicating a possible La Nina season. However Mr. Gomoga says if the current sea surface temperature which is a favourable condition for La Nina doesn’t change, then PNG will experience heavy rains which will cause flooding. Other impacts of possible continuous rain include, destruction of food gardens, damage to roads and infrastructure and delay in construction projects. He also explained that the rainy weather that we are experiencing is part of the La Nina weather pattern. Meantime a La Nina season or the long periods of rain can last from 6months to 2 years.
