*** Strong Storm System Still Slated to Impact Region...just a little later *** We are still on a track for a strong storm system to impact our region this week...but now it looks like it will be Tuesday night into Wednesday as opposed to earlier in the day Tuesday. The upper-level system responsible for the expected weather is deeper and slower to move than originally thought. Here is what you can expect over the next few days... * Today...milder but continued cloudy with patches of light rain and drizzle. High temperatures in the 50s and 60s. Definitely less rain then Sunday. * Tuesday...warmer and becoming windy in the west. Wind gusts in excess of 40 mph possible during the day in the Mercer...Tazewell...Smyth county region. A wind advisory will likely be needed and possibly a high wind warning if stronger winds appear possible. Scattered showers continuing...mainly west...with increasing threat thunderstorms toward evening west. High temperatures approaching 80 degrees across the Piedmont Tuesday afternoon! * Tuesday night/Wednesday...numerous showers and thunderstorms...but primarily concentrated in a narrow south-north oriented band overnight west to Wednesday afternoon east. Strong to damaging wind gusts and heavy rain expected...but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. Highest risk for severe weather appears to be west of the Blue Ridge. * Thursday...variably cloudy and cooler with scattered showers...especially during the afternoon...mainly west of the Blue Ridge. * Friday into the weekend...still plenty of clouds and cool across the mountains...but overall improving weather with seasonably cool temperatures and increasing amounts of sunshine by Saturday.
