Students read poetry at library James Redmond, Mail Staff Writer A group of about 10 Crest Academy students took turns reading poetry aloud for “World Read Aloud Day” Monday in the Salida Regional Library. The students read poems by authors such as Edgar Allan Poe and Georg Heym, and one student read a poem she wrote herself. As students read the poetry, other students handed out literature to library patrons and held signs about “World Read Aloud Day.” By reading aloud, the students hoped to raise awareness about people in the world who cannot read, Claire Shepherd, Crest Academy seventh-grader, said. The event also lets people know about global statistics related to reading and literacy, seventh-grader Melissa McKenna said. Literature handed out by the students included global literacy statistics such as “a child born to a mother who can read is 50 percent more likely to survive past the age of 5 than a child born to an illiterate woman.” The amount of difference reading can make “is really cool,” McKenna said. When someone reads out loud, such as a parent to a child, that can improve literacy and in so doing can make a positive difference in lives of others, seventh-grader Nina Veazey said. The students learned about “World Read Aloud Day” as part of Andrea Schulz-Ward’s global citizenship class. While “World Read Aloud Day” takes place today, the students held their event Monday because of their class schedule.
