Study God’s Words Just think … A man who is well-grounded in the testimonies of the Scripture is the fortification of the Church.—Jerome Taste and see… “Search the Scriptures.”—John 5:39 The Greek word here rendered search signifies a strict, close, diligent, curious search, such as men make when they are seeking gold, or hunters when they are in earnest after game. We must not rest content with having given a superficial reading to a chapter or two, but with the candle of the Spirit we must deliberately seek out the hidden meaning of the word. Holy Scripture requires searching—much of it can only be learned by careful study. There is milk for babes, but also meat for strong men. … No man who merely skims the book of God can profit thereby; we must dig and mine until we obtain the hid treasure. The door of the word only opens to the key of diligence. The Scriptures claim searching. They are the writings of God. … He who despises them despises the God who wrote them. God forbid that Many of us should leave our Bibles to become swift witnesses against us in the great day of account. The word of God will repay searching. God does not bid us sift a mountain of chaff with here and there a grain of wheat in it, but the Bible is winnowed corn—we have but to open the granary door and find it. Scripture grows upon the student. It is full of surprises. Under the teaching of the Holy Spirit, to the searching eye it glows with splendor of revelation, like a vast temple paved with wrought gold, and roofed with rubies, emeralds, and all manner of gems. … Lastly, the Scriptures reveal Jesus: “They are they which testify of me.” No more powerful motive can be urged upon Bible readers than this: he who finds Jesus finds life, heaven, all things. Happy he who, searching his Bible, discovers his Savior. (Charles Surgeon, Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening Devotional, Ed. 3) What is the life of God? He said, “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life”! (Jn.6:63.) That’s the life of God, it’s His Word, that’s what gives us life and food and nourishment and strength and spiritual health. That scripture always impressed me. Think of that! They are Spirit and they are Life! They’re real things! They’re really something. These are things you can’t see, you can’t touch, but without them everything would be dead, totally dead. Jesus is the Word, He is the spirit and the life, and you have to have a dose of Him everyday, really, and have a good feeding and feasting and drinking. Just like you have to eat in order to have physical strength, you have to eat of the Word, drink of the Word to have spiritual strength. The Word is Jesus, the Word is God, the Word is Spirit, the Word is life! And without Jesus you’re without God, you’re without Spirit, you’re without Life, you’re dead! The flame goes out, just like when it runs out of oil or fuel. The secret of power and victory and overcoming and fruitfulness and fire and life and warmth and light and leadership, everything, is the Word! Back it up… Psalms 119:1–11 Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord! Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with the whole heart! They also do no iniquity; they walk in His ways. You have commanded us to keep Your precepts diligently. Oh, that my ways were directed to keep Your statutes! Then I would not be ashamed, when I look into all Your commandments. I will praise You with uprightness of heart, when I learn Your righteous judgments. I will keep Your statutes; oh, do not forsake me utterly! How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. With my whole heart I have sought You; oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You! Prayer for the day… Jesus, make me a better student of Your Word. In Jesus name, Amen. 1/19/15
