Subway sandwich shops are appeasing Muslims who’ve argued that serving pork is not “halal.” The sandwich franchise said “following a strong demand from our Muslim customers” the 185 stores in the United Kingdom and Ireland have reduced pork, which is not prepared under the strict guidelines of Islam. Muslims have argued the meat is not “halal” in the Koran, or “permitted,” in their Islamic religion. Because of this, Muslims argue Subway should not sell their pork. The notion of “halal” is similar to kosher standards in Judaism, though you don’t see Jews going around and suing sandwich shops for not following their particular religion’s food standards.
